We had ADP Run which had a very easy interface and was very intuitive. We were "sold" on moving to ADP TotalSource as a "one stop shop" to help us manage our 20+ employee company as we are growing. This was the worst mistake we could have done. We had a turnaround with our "go-to" people during the implementation phase. Worked with 8+ people on getting us switched to ADP TotalSource (not affiliated with ADP Run other than owned by the same company, by the way). And then we had absolutely no training. I figured okay I can figure it out, we have all of these specific reps for specific HR functions - payroll, benefits, etc. and that there would be a learning curve but it would all make sense. This was supposed to lessen our need for HR when instead I spend almost every part of my work time within the ADP Workforce Now platform which is part of TotalSource. The specific reps that are assigned to our company are sometimes hard to get a hold of, they seem overworked with too many companies to manage, and a lot of times no one can even help me! I have to call the 1-800 myadvisor line for help from a random person who doesn't know our company's history/needs. It is out of control. AND it's not a cheap platform. We will be moving back or away from ADP altogether once our contract is up.
  • Managing OSHA compliance standards/certification
  • Nothing else comes to mind. The website is archaic and some links don't lead you anywhere.
  • Training for us as a customer to train our own employees to understand how one issue might affect payroll, HR, and benefits - everyone who is a "specialist" should know how these go hand in hand in order to fully assist their customers.
  • The website is awful - links don't go anywhere, there is too much information, too many choices, and all of these things that a small business that doesn't have trained HR personnel would understand or have knowledge on what to do.
  • Payroll is a mess. It is not intuitive in my opinion. You have to add multiple "batches" of different kinds of data in order to pull everyone from salaried employees to time-punched employees information into. Then if you have to give double time, time and a half, specific deductions, or salary bonuses, watch out!!! It is not easy. Different columns of data need to be inserted and then you have to make sure you're adding a negative amount or positive amount (not intuitive) depending on the type of column you added to make sure you're properly adding money to their paycheck vs deducting money. It is a mess. And if you're not sure, you basically have to have an outstanding weekly meeting with your specialist which is hard to come by.
I would say -100 if that were a choice. Based on the information below. The representatives are nice but have too many clients on their plate and, in my experience, don't know the answers/how to help. If I could tell you the number of times I've been told to call the 1-800 number since we started in January (and we are 5 months in), I definitely would have a nice bonus in my bank account.
  • Payroll
  • HR/Employee Management
  • Safety/OSHA Compliant
  • Benefits
  • It has cost us more money from a financial aspect and then taken away my main/other job duties because I have to focus all of my time on ADP TotalSource and basically fixing errors that happen weekly/every time an employee is added or terminated (which is more than the normal company due to the nature of our business).
ADP Run is great! I would switch back in a heartbeat. It is not a "one stop shop" as far as HR goes - it has payroll, legal, time and attendance, etc. but TotalSource is supposed to also have a benefits component, OSHA/short term disability assistance, etc. but it has not been easy to manage, navigate, or use.

TotalSource as our PEO. We use the software as our HRIS/Payroll system. As of now, we don't use it across the whole organization for everything, but we will in the future. From a streamlining processes and receiving support standpoint it's been helpful thus far. They offer lots of assistance.
  • eliminate paper forms
  • help streamline processes
  • provide assistance with issues
  • the response times from the support staff could be a bit better
  • the implementation team just drops you
  • think they should hire more people to lessen the support staffs work load
If you are looking for assistance with making sure your company is in compliance, I would highly recommend. If you are just looking for an HRIS system...stick to Workforce now. There's a lot of work involved in signing on with a PEO upfront and most people don't have the bandwidth to handle that during an implementation.
  • compliance
  • risk management
  • assistance
  • helped streamline processes
  • helped with our paperless initiative
  • helped with keeping us in compliance
Workforce now is easier to use! TotalSource has a lot of quirks in it that are totally unnecessary. It's as if they took Workforce Now and adding all these different codes and features to call it TotalSource. However, upon logging in, TotalSource looks and operates basically the same as Workforce Now.

We used to use ADP TotalSource and decided to cancel our service with them. They are a PEO. It was a hard decision to terminate our account with them because of the difficulty of setting it up, getting all our employees on there and then switching it, but as hard as that was, we decided to do it because [we think that] ADP TotalSource's services are horrendous - [and we believe that] they have the worst customer service and product in the market. It's hard to navigate their customer dashboard, so hard to make payroll every period and when you ask for help, they provide a 877 number; where you are put on hold forever. There are so many other great options out there and we decided to work with an alternate - Rippling and we're very happy with it.
  • Nothing
  • Can't think of anything
  • Nope
  • Customer Service
  • Product
  • Responsiveness
I would never recommend ADP TotalSource to anyone and would actively share alternatives with anyone looking for a PEO.
  • PEO
  • Filing Taxes
  • Reports
  • Negative - Slowed things down
  • Negative - Lack of customer service support in times of need
  • Negative - When we told them we're closing our account, they became hostile and even less responsive
[I think that] all other options are about 100X better than ADP TotalSource. [I also think] ADP TotalSource is too comfortable and thinks they don't need to improve to be competitive. However, the reality is, competition is eating up their market. Some ADP staff, in particular, are too comfortable.

Totalsource is used across our organization for payroll, benefits, and human resource management
  • Payroll is relatively straightforward
  • Customer service is horrible
  • Follow up takes 7-10 days, and requires multiple inquiries from you, the client
  • The promised "dedicated team" doesn't exist
  • Onboarding is confusing to new hires
  • Explanation of benefits to new hires is useless and must be done in office, thereby negating any value.
  • They should not provide handling UI claims as as service. They have no ability to actually meet deadlines.
A "0" rating was not an option. ADP's handling of UI claims is non-existent, which caused our rate to double. Claims were ignored and responses filed late. Appeals filed late. Employee names were mixed up. ADP puts the blame on an outside vendor. Be aware, the state does not find "we have too much mail" a valid reason for non-responsiveness, and your business will pay the price, literally. Hiring ADP was the worst business decision we have ever made.
  • Using ADP has cost my business a ridiculous amount of time and money, in work involved to correct their error and fines/penalties for missed deadlines. Zero ROI.

ADP is used company-wide for various HR and payroll services. Our HR department handles onboarding, benefits, and payroll through ADP for a 30 person company that has expanded two-fold in the past year. Thus far, ADP has scaled extremely well with us as we have grown, and we have yet to experience a single hiccup involving payroll or benefits that didn't involve user error.
  • ADP handles payroll extremely well. Employees are able to check on their paystubs within seconds without having to contact HR, benefits are clearly displayed, and the various interfaces are helpful.
  • ADP has invested pretty heavily in customer service. There isn't any issue you can't receive almost immediate help for by contacting ADP directly.
  • ADP scales well with new additions, this is particularly important for growing companies.
  • The interface is dated, which is pretty typical amongst various HR software.
  • There are several paths to the same points which can lead to confusion for users. Just for example, ADP has three ways to view a paystub off the top of my head, none of which offer anything unique.
  • ADP has some strange quirks that sometimes require workarounds. One of our employees had to opt out of physical paychecks several times over across four separate areas to finally stop receiving letters.
ADP is perfect for HR departments or employers that are looking for a simple, easy to use HR solution. There is nothing particularly complex about using ADP for your companies payroll and benefits, which is a boon for most HR departments. I wouldn't suggest ADP if you are looking for a more robust solution to your HR and benefits; or something that has a really well polished and "pretty" UI.
  • ADP has made onboarding a breeze, which has saved us a ton of time in the hiring process. Freeing up employees to start work as soon as possible is extremely valuable in any space.
  • ADP doesn't need direct oversight most of the time, it being a very "set it and forget it" type of platform frees up our HR department for other things.
ADP is significantly more "corporate" than BambooHR or Workable. Which is to say that it is an extremely simple solution, with basic interface design; that gets the job done well nearly every time. It doesn't sport the recruiting capabilities that Workable comes standard with or the extremely modern design and flow BambooHR utilizes. But ADP more than makes up for that with reliability and simplicity.
